Advancing Care – From Bench to Bedside
Burns are a life-altering event that changes lives in an instant.
They cause immediate and long-term trauma to mind and body and are arguably the most painful, unique, and complex injury a human can suffer.
At the Fiona Wood Foundation, we understand that scars are more than skin deep; they influence an individual’s physical, psychological, and physiological wellbeing. Watch Professor Wood discuss the impact of the Foundation’s work.
History
The Fiona Wood Foundation was originally established in 1999 as the McComb Foundation, with a focus on advancing research into skin regeneration and improving burn care outcomes.
From the beginning, the Foundation was created to support innovative science and clinical progress for people living with burn injuries.
In 2002, the Foundation gained international recognition when Professor Wood and her team used the then-experimental RECELL® treatment to help care for survivors of the Bali bombings. This breakthrough treatment demonstrated the significant potential of regenerative medicine in emergency burn care, accelerating healing and helping to reduce scarring.

“We aim to be at the forefront of global research and discovery in the area of burns and scarring.”

RECELL® is now produced, marketed, and distributed globally by Avita Medical Inc, enabling this life-changing innovation to reach patients around the world.
In 2012, the McComb Foundation was renamed the Fiona Wood Foundation in honour of Professor Wood’s pioneering contributions to burn medicine and her leadership in transforming burn treatment.
Today, the Fiona Wood Foundation continues to drive world-class research, support clinical innovation, and deliver education programs that improve outcomes for burn survivors. Guided by a commitment to turning scientific discovery into real-world healing, the Foundation remains dedicated to improving lives in Australia and across the globe.

Ripple Effect
The Foundation’s logo is representative of the ‘ripple effect’ a burn has on a patient and the wider community.
For the Foundation, the intertwined lines symbolise our vision of working together to make a difference through improving the outcomes and quality of life for those affected by burn injury.
